Irminsul (all-encompassing column, "Irminsäule, Exalted Column) was a large and sacred tree trunk, a symbol of the world tree, named after the war god Irmin. Irmin ( "the Exalted One") was the son of the male of the Germanic group of the Hermitones. The Irminsul was a main sanctum of pagan Germans. The mighty pillar is said to symbolize the connection of heaven with earth. When this connection is interrupted, the world is shaken. Irminsul is therefore regarded as a Saxon equivalent of the Eddic Yggdrasill. This is supposed to tremble at the beginning of the world-fiery Ragnarök and the Dawn of the Dawn. The Irminsul is surrounded by the powerful rune row of the ancient gods.
